Breastfeeding  Medicine

At MomSense, our team provides comprehensive breastfeeding medicine solutions.

Our Advanced Practice nurses (APRNs) and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) look at the entire picture — including any risk factors that mom and/or baby may have that can be common causes of infant feeding difficulties. An IBCLC will evaluate and help with any feeding-related problems you may be experiencing to help you meet your breastfeeding goals, whatever they may be. This means that bottle-feeding infants are a huge part of our practice at MomSense!

Working in combination with APRNs allows us the ability to treat any medical complications such as mastitis, thrush, perform frenectomies when necessary, assess and treat medical causes of supply issues.

Additional MomSense Services

SneakPeek DNA Gender Testing

While every person has her own DNA in her bloodstream, a pregnant woman’s bloodstream also contains DNA from her unborn child. SneakPeek looks for male chromosomes in a small sample of mom’s blood. If male chromosomes are found, that means the baby is a boy. If none are found, the baby is a girl. SneakPeek is 99.9% accurate at eight weeks into pregnancy.

Prenatal Consults

Meet with an IBCLC for a prenatal visit in order to talk about your concerns and expectations with breastfeeding to help you prepare for the birth of your baby and get assistance from an expert to help you along the way with your breastfeeding journey.

Infant Weight Checks

Creamatocrit Testing

Sometimes it can relieve parents to know exactly how many calories their baby is getting — especially if a mother has been mistakenly told that she has “skim milk”.

Any mother is welcome to have their milk tested, whether there are perceived caloric deficits or you are simply interested in finding out how many calories your breast milk may contain. One way to assess the caloric content of your milk is to perform a creamatocrit test on your breastmilk to measure the amount of calories and fat.  Breast milk is placed in a tube and spun in a machine, which causes the cream in your milk to rise to the top. The amount of cream helps us to figure out the amount of fat and calories in your breast milk.

Speech Services

Our speech language services support clients across the lifespan with communication, feeding, and oral function. In addition to traditional speech therapy, we specialize in orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT)-a targeted approach that addresses the muscles of the face, tongue, and mouth to improve breathing, swallowing, and speech clarity. Whether we’re working with infants experiencing feeding challenges, children with articulation delays, or adults navigating tongue tie or airway concerns, our goal is to support optimal function and whole-body wellness through personalized, evidence-based care.

Infant CO2 Laser Frenectomy

Evaluations/oral functional assessments are performed with our specialty-trained IBCLCs and APRNs to determine if an oral tie may be a reason that a baby is having trouble with feedings. Post-procedure plan of care includes follow-up appointments to assure that wounds heal correctly and a possible recommendation for other services may be given — such as a speech-language pathologist, chiropractor, cranial-sacral therapist, and/or oral myofunctional therapist based on the functional difficulties that may be present.

Child/Adult Laser Frenectomy

A nurse practitioner would see you in the office for an assessment and have you follow up with our speech-language pathologist/OMT for an evaluation and appropriate pre/post-operative exercises. After working with the speech-language pathologist, you can then be scheduled with the nurse practitioner for a frenectomy.

Baby and Feeding Supply Donation

MomSense is a donation site for unopened formula, non-expired coupons, breastfeeding supplies, including pumps, and other feeding-related items. Anyone in need is welcome to stop in and take what they need. No appointment is needed.

MomSense is proud to serve as an official donor depot for the Indiana Milk Bank, providing a safe and supportive space for approved donors to drop off or pick up their lifesaving breastmilk for babies in need.
